Lab in the Pack is a device intended to replace the electronics lab for educational purposes at the undergraduate level and below. It is a portable low-cost device that combines the utility of four key devices: the wave generator, the power supply, the oscilloscope, and the multimeter.

Project History

This project was inherited from a previous development team which had designed and prototyped the original proof-of-concept model. The client's long term goals for the project were to develop it to the point of being able to sell it to educators as a teaching tool. As a student team we had limited development time (8 months) therefore our goals were to progress the clients goals in an efficient manner rather than produce ready-for-market device.

As such we identified three key weaknesses in the original design which we intended to tackle:

  1. Software interface was rudimentary and did not allow access to all of the devices features.

  2. Firmware was largely undocumented and unknown posing significant challenge to future development efforts.

  3. The analog front-end signal quality did not meet the client's expectations.

Outcomes

At the end of the project we delivered multiple prototype units, design files, and documentation to our client. The videos below demonstrate the overall functionality of our final product:
